The UT Trombone Choir and UT Jazz Bones win International Competitions

2007 marked the first time in ITA competition history that one school has won both of its ensemble competitions in the same year. The UT Trombone Choir was named winner of the prestigious 2007 International Trombone Association Emory Remington International Trombone Choir Competition and was featured in a showcase concert at the International Trombone Festival (Las Vegas) in June. Programmed selections included the premiere of works by UT composition faculty member Donald Grantham -- Las Vegas Shuffle (Leaving Broke) and UT alum Rob DeemerShock and Awe. In addition to presenting a showcase concert, the group was also featured in performance with internationally acclaimed soloists, Alex Iles and Carl Lenthe. The UT Choir was also winners of the 2002 International Trombone Association Emory Remington International Trombone Choir Competition.

The UT Jazz Bones also garnered honors by winning the 2007 ITA Kai Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition. The members of the Jazz Bones are: Ulrican Williams, Mitch Butler, Javier Stuppard, Oscar Diaz and Martin McCain (trombones) and rhythm section members Michelle Daniels-Garaci (piano), Kris Afflerbaugh (bass) and Tyler Summers (drums). The ensemble presented an ITF showcase concert and was featured in an after-hours jazz performance with jazz great, Bill Reichenbach. The UT Jazz Bones also won the 2001 Winding Competition.
