Recorded Audition Deadline
- Wednesday, January 15, 2014
Live Audition Information:
All graduate performance applicants must perform and pass a live audition. Exceptions may be made those applying to a Jazz Performance degree or residing outside of the United States; these students must get approval from the head of the appropriate division to audition with a DVD instead. Audition requirements vary for each instrument/division, please see links below for your audition repertoire requirements.
All applicants must submit the UT application and the Butler School of Music application before an audition can be scheduled. The deadline for requesting an audition date or review of a recorded audition, which is done through the BSoM application, is January 1, 2013. No applications, requests for live auditions, or requests for review of recorded auditions will be accepted after the deadline.
You will receive confirmation of your audition date by email after we receive your BSoM application and verify the receipt of your UT application with Main University Admissions. Please do NOT make travel plans until you have received an audition confirmation email. We do our best to place applicants on their requested audition date. We cannot guarantee a slot on your requested audition date if you wait until the last minute to submit your applications and audition request. Due to the high volume of audition requests, it is not possible for the School of Music to accommodate specific audition times. Auditions last either 10 or 15 minutes. Please be prepared to be on campus for the entire day in the case that you receive a time later in the day. It is generally required that you check-in at the School of Music lobby between 8:30 and 9:00 AM. Auditions are held from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Once you have been assigned an audition date, it is VERY UNLIKELY that the date can be rescheduled, so be sure to plan accordingly.
With the exception of the DMA in Music & Human Learning with Piano Pedagogy Specialization, auditions are not required for those applying to our academic programs (Composition, Theory, Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Music & Human Learning).
PRESCREENING AUDITIONS:
Applicants to clarinet, conducting, flute, piano, collaborative piano, piano pedagogy (DMA in Music and Human Learning), percussion (non jazz), violin, and voice/opera performance must complete prescreening procedures by submitting a recorded audition. Only selected applicants will be invited and required to play a live audition following the successful completion of the prescreening procedures. Please see information about prescreening procedures here.
ACCOMPANISTS (VOICE/OPERA APPLICANTS ONLY):
Accompaniment will be provided for voice auditions free of charge if your piano sheet music is submitted by mail to the Butler School by the December 1, 2012 application deadline. Faxed music is NOT accepted. Accompaniment is not required or provided for instrumental auditions.
APPLICANTS IN ALL OTHER PERFORMANCE AREAS:
If you are unable to attend any of the above dates but would still like to have a live audition, it may be possible for you to audition privately on a different day. Please contact the appropriate faculty member or division head by email or by calling the Butler School of Music switchboard at (512) 471-7764. We suggest that you audition as early as possible. Pending studio approval you may also submit an audio or video recording made within the past twelve months as a substitute for a live audition.
The above audition dates are NOT applicable for Conducting applicants, which are arranged directly between the applicant and the Conducting faculty.
