Recorded Audition Deadline
- Monday, December 01, 2014
Prescreening submissions for fall 2015 entry must be uploaded and submitted with the BSOM application by this date.
- Thursday, January 01, 2015
Recorded auditions for fall 2015 entry must be uploaded and submitted with the BSOM application by this date. Applicants must also have passed the prescreening process, if required.
Applicants to Clarinet, Collaborative Piano, Conducting, Flute, Guitar, Opera Coaching, Opera Directing, Opera Performance, Piano, Piano Pedagogy (DMA in Music and Human Learning), Percussion (non-jazz), Viola, Violin, and Voice Performance must submit a prescreening video audition through the BSOM supplemental application by the December 1 deadline.
Only selected applicants will be invited and required to play a live audition following the successful completion of the prescreening procedures. Please see information about prescreening procedures here. Current UT students applying for a further degree and graduate students who are reapplying to end an official leave of absence are exempt from the prescreening requirement.
All graduate performance applicants must perform and pass a live audition. Audition requirements vary for each instrument/division, please see the links below for your audition repertoire requirements. All applicants must submit the UT application and the Butler School of Music application before an audition can be scheduled.
The above audition dates are NOT applicable for Conducting applicants. Conducting auditions are arranged directly between the applicant and the conducting faculty.
You will receive confirmation of your audition date by email after we receive your BSoM application and verify the receipt of your UT application with the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC). Please do NOT make travel plans until you have received an audition confirmation email. We do our best to place applicants on their requested audition date. We cannot guarantee a slot on your requested audition date if you wait until the last minute to submit your applications and audition request. Due to the high volume of audition requests, it is not possible for the School of Music to accommodate specific audition times. Auditions last between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on your instrument.
Please be prepared to be on campus for the entire day in the case that you receive a time later in the day. It is generally required that you check in at the School of Music lobby between 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM. Auditions are held from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Once you have been assigned an audition date, it is VERY UNLIKELY that the date can be rescheduled, so be sure to plan accordingly. Practice rooms will be open and available for warm-up throughout the day.
With the exception of the DMA in Music & Human Learning (Piano Pedagogy Specialization), auditions are not required for those applying to our academic programs (Composition, Theory, Musicology, Ethnomusicology, or Music & Human Learning).
In some areas, a recorded audition can be accepted instead of a live audition in Austin. If you do not see your instrument listed in the recorded audition guidelines above and would like to inquire about the possibility of submitting a recorded audition, please contact the Graduate Admissions Coordinator at email@example.com.
The piano performance division does not accept recorded auditions as final under any circumstances. All pianists who pass the prescreening round MUST audition live in Austin during one of the scheduled audition days listed above.
ACCOMPANISTS (VOICE/OPERA APPLICANTS ONLY):
Piano accompaniment is required for all vocal auditions. If desired, accompaniment will be provided by a BSoM staff accompanist free of charge if your piano sheet music is submitted to the Butler School as a part of your BSoM supplemental application. Faxed or mailed music is NOT accepted. You may also bring your own accompanist. Accompaniment is not required or provided for instrumental auditions.
APPLICANTS IN ALL OTHER PERFORMANCE AREAS:
If you are unable to attend any of the above dates but would still like to have a live audition, it may be possible for you to audition privately on a different day. Please contact the appropriate faculty member or division head by email or by calling the Butler School of Music switchboard at (512) 471-7764. All auditions must be completed by February 1, 2014. With studio faculty approval, you may also submit an audio or video recording made within the past twelve months as a substitute for a live audition. Please note that some areas do not accept recorded auditions under any circumstances.
