Applicants to degrees in Performance or Literature/Pedagogy in the following areas: Clarinet, Collaborative Piano, Conducting (band, choral, opera, or orchestral), Flute, Piano, Percussion (non-Jazz), Violin, and Voice/Opera must submit a prescreening recording in order to be invited to a live on-campus audition. Please see the video/audio media specifications listed below to ensure that your recording is formatted correctly.
Your prescreening materials should be postmarked no later than 1 December. The prescreening process will be complete by the second week of January. Please do not contact us regarding the prescreening results prior to this date.
NOTE: Students interested in programs in Collaborative Piano must contact Professor Anne Epperson (pianneo@aol.com) before applying.
Applicants to doctoral programs in Music & Human Learning are prescreened on the basis of all application materials. Additionally, PhD applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of successful school teaching and the DMA applicants a minimum of 2 years of successful studio or school teaching. Applicants for the DMA in Music and Human Learning (Piano Pedagogy Specialization) must hold a MM degree, and must perform an on-campus piano audition if they pass the piano prescreening stage. The prescreening piano recording may be either a DVD (preferred) or CD. Applicants for the DMA in Music and Human Learning (Jazz Studies Specialization) must hold a MM degree, have had successful experience in the jazz idiom as either a teacher, composer/arranger, or performer. Selected applicants will be invited to campus for a formal review that includes a writing exercise, an interview and an audition (only piano pedagogy applicants need to play an audition).
Currently enrolled UT-Austin music students requesting admission to the graduate performance areas for Clarinet, Flute, Piano, Percussion, Violin, Voice/Opera, or the DMA MHL Piano Pedagogy Specialization program are not required to submit a prescreening recording but must request a live audition online for one of the departmental audition dates.
