Thank you for your interest in The University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music! Applying to UT Austin as a music major is a two-part process. In addition to completing an application to the university's Office of Admissions, all prospective music majors are required to submit an additional application, letters of recommendation, and complete an audition for the Butler School. In some cases, a prescreening audition, portfolio, or additional essays may also be required.
The Butler School of Music gives preference to applicants who select music as their first-choice major. To be seriously considered for admission to the BSOM, select "College of Fine Arts Unclassified Music" as your first-choice major on the ApplyTexas application. You will be able to indicate your preferred music degree (performance, composition, etc.) on the BSOM application.
You can find the Butler School of Music application, audition requirements, and audition dates on this website (links to the right). If you have questions regarding any part of the application or audition process and can't find the answer in the online materials, please contact Sarah Borshard, Undergraduate Admissions Coordinator.
Each year the UT Office of Admissions hosts a variety of campus events just for prospective and incoming students and their families. Taking part in campus events offers you the opportunity to see what the campus is really like, interact with other prospective students, and receive information directly from the staff members and admissions counselors who are trained to help prospective students find answers to the questions that always cause the most trouble.
Events include those designed to offer prospective freshmen a preview of the campus like Explore UT (March), and Longhorn Saturdays and Mondays (various dates). Transfer to Texas (December) is a special event for prospective transfer students and students currently enrolled in the Coordinated Admission Program.
Applicants can schedule a personalized campus visit online. You can select from a variety of visit-related activities, including admissions information sessions held in the Undergraduate Admissions Center (UAC), campus tours, and a College of Fine Arts Information Session and Tour. The Fine Arts Session is offered on most Mondays and Fridays at 1:30pm. Registration generally opens one month in advance.
Prospective freshmen and transfer applicants should register for a campus visit. Registration generally opens one month in advance. If you're not considering admission to UT Austin in the next couple of years, you may still have many reasons to want to see the campus.

FUTURE UT NON-MUSIC MAJORS
All Butler School of Music ensembles are open to any currently enrolled UT student who can pass the ensemble audition. Please visit the ensembles webpage or contact the Orchestra Office, Choir Office, or Band Office directly for ensemble audition dates and requirements. Further information on music courses and lessons available to non-music majors is also available on our website.
The Butler School of Music, like most other units of The University of Texas at Austin, does not offer any self-contained minors. If your degree plan includes a minor, then you may use music as a minor. You must meet with an advisor in your own college to plan your minor. Please visit the Music Minor webpage for more information.
Ms. Borshard is only available to meet with prospective music majors.
