Details: The Miró Quartet and Opera super star Sasha Cooke combine forces in this unique evening of chamber music for voice and strings. The program opens with a miniature cycle of Hugo Wolf, which blends lieder-style into an elegy by Puccini, and culminates in Respighi's dramatic Lyric Poem "Il Tramonto." The second half is a cycle of American Music, which begins rooted in the deep romanticism of Barber, arching through the brooding colors of George Crumb, and finishes with favorites from the Copland American Songbook. Several of the Lieder to be performed have recently been arranged by Miró Quartet violist John Largess for voice and quartet, and will be receiving their premieres in this form this season. Sasha Cooke's rich and expressive mezzo finds its perfect partner in the passionate and evocative string blend of the Miró Quartet. It is a lush and lyric evening of music, in the spirit of an old Viennese Kammerabend, intimate and unforgettable.
