In the spring of 2011, the University of Texas Butler School of Music acquired the 1963 Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1393 from the Central Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas. Robert Coulter restored the historic organ in his Atlanta, Georgia, workshop before it was installed in Jessen Auditorium this fall semester. We were able to acquire this instrument through the generosity of Robert Sherrill in honor of his late wife, Mary Elizabeth Sherrill, who graduated with a master's degree in music studies from UT in 1955. In Robert Sherrill's words Mary was, "a very good pianist and organist. From the Italian Concerto to the Maple Leaf Rag, Mary was a knockout on her seven-foot Baldwin grand."
In addition to Robert Sherrill and his family, the Butler School would like to thank the University of Texas College of Fine Arts, the congregation of the Houston Central Presbyterian Church, Robert Coulter, and Judith and Gerre Hancock. This project was a true collaboration of all parties and Jessen Auditorium now has an instrument perfectly suited to its space.
