How to Join

Membership in Symphony Orchestra is determined via auditions which are open to all qualified students at The University. These auditions take place the first week of classes of the fall term, and are heard by the conductors and the appropriate applied music professor. Professor Zimmermann may call for auditions at the beginning of the spring term.

String Auditions
Each audition is five minutes in length. Students are requested to perform solo material of their choice which demonstrates both the technical and expressive qualities of their performance, not to exceed three minutes in length. Students are also required to prepare a set of excerpts which are available online (see below) and also from the Performance Library.

String students may sign up for an audition time, outside of MRH 2.118, on a signup sheet that will be posted no later than August 15th of each year.

Audition results will be posted on the Orchestra Board, just outside of the Orchestra Rehearsal Hall (MRH 2.118), shortly after the completion of all auditions. Students who do not qualify for Symphony Orchestra may be recommended for placement in the University Orchestra.
