Butler School of Music to Host World’s Leading Young Violinists’ Competition and Festival

AUSTIN, Texas — The Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin announced today that it will host the 2014 Menuhin Competition from Feb. 21 to March 2. This biennial competition, the pre-eminent international competition for young violinists, will be held in North America for the first time in its 29-year history.

The Aeolus Quartet, Butler School of Music's first graduate string quartet, has been named Juilliard's graduate resident string quartet for 2013-2014. The group – which features violinists Nicholas Tavani and Rachel Shapiro, violist Gregory Luce, and cellist Alan Richardson – begins its residency in September 2013.

Donald Grantham, a composer and Butler School of Music faculty member, has been inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame. Dr. Grantham's music has been praised for its "elegance, sensitivity, lucidity of thought, clarity of expression and fine lyricism" in a Citation awarded by the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.

Ernest C. Butler has received the Texas Medical Association's (TMA's) highest physician honor for his contributions to the medical community and to the community at large. The UT School of Music was renamed the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music in 2008, following the couple's 25 years of philanthropic support to the school.
