The Butler School of Music’s annual Diversity Concert is a celebration of the music of African American composers, featuring performances by Butler School students and faculty, along with choral and jazz ensembles from Huston-Tillotson University.
Auditions will be held in Bates Recital Hall on Sunday, December 6th from 1:00-3:00 PM.
There are openings in the concert for vocal and instrumental soloists, chamber groups, jazz combos and other ensembles. Students should sign up for an audition by Friday, December 4th with Kathryn Hutchison in MRH 3.832B.
Audition requirements: Students should audition with the repertoire they wish to perform on the concert. Repertoire should be written by an African American composer; in the case of jazz and spirituals, traditional selections that have been arranged by an African American composer are acceptable. Performances of compositions by African American students at the Butler School are also encouraged. Students should audition with the ensemble or collaborative pianist with whom they wish to perform on the concert. Please contact Professor Anne Epperson to make arrangements with the collaborative piano division. Each audition will be ten minutes in length.
Students who are selected to perform on the Diversity Concert must be available for the concert dress rehearsal, Friday, February 5th from 4:00-6:00 PM in Bates Recital Hall, and for the concert, Saturday, February 6th, at 7:30 PM in Bates Recital Hall.
Please contact Kathryn Hutchison at khutchison@mail.utexas.edu, 512-471-5496 if you have questions regarding the auditions, the Diversity Concert, or appropriate repertoire.
