Now in its Eleventh year, the Visiting Composer Series is recognized as the foremost
series of its kind in the country. Each year a number of outstanding composers is
brought to the UT campus for three days of rehearsal, performance, lectures, and
classes. What makes this series unique among projects of its kind is the importance
of having student performing groups heavily involved in the residencies: the
Symphony Orchestra,
Wind Ensemble, New Music Ensemble,
Choral Ensembles, and
Opera Theater have all been heavily involved in performing the music of
our time in the presence of the women and men who are writing that music.
The Visiting Composers Series has hosted such luminaries as John Corigliano, Thea
Musgrave, John Harbison, Joan Tower, and David Del Tredici. Directed by composer
Dan Welcher
(Lee Hage Jamail Regents Professor of Fine Arts), the Series has become one of the
most closely-watched elements of the Austin arts calendar.
