  • A graduate performance applicant requesting admission to graduate study in performance at the School of Music must perform and pass an audition conducted by the faculty in their area as part of the application process. Audition requirements vary, so please review the information on the Graduate Audition Form (UT EID and password required), and read more about your performance area requirements at Requirements Part 2: School of Music. Detailed audition repertoire requirements for nearly all areas, including requirements for pre-screening recordings, can be found in the pdf Graduate Audition Repertoire Requirements.

  • School of Music live auditions take place on the UT Austin campus on selected Saturdays in January and February. With the exception of applicants in flute, piano, and voice/opera, by the time you submit your online audition request form, you must have completed the online UT application, paid the fee, and had ALL other application materials submitted (letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, test scores, transcripts, etc.) ONLY after we have received all of these items plus your online audition request will the School of Music confirm your audition date. You will receive this confirmation by mail.

  • Due to the high volume of audition requests, it is not possible for the School of Music to accommodate specific audition times. Auditions last either 10 or 15 minutes. Please be prepared to be on campus for the entire day in the case that you receive a time later in the day. It is generally required that you check-in at the School of Music lobby between 8:30 - 9:00 AM. Auditions are held from 9 AM 6 PM.

  • With the exception of the DMA in Music & Human Learning with Piano Pedagogy Specialization, auditions are not required for those applying to our academic programs (Composition, Theory, Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Music & Human Learning.)

PRE-SCREENING FOR APPLICANTS IN FLUTE, PIANO & VOICE/OPERA:

For applicants in Flute, Piano, and Voice/Opera, due to the pre-screening process, by December 1 you need only complete the online application, pay the fee, and submit your pre-screening recording and audition form, indicating the preferred dates (you may rank them if you wish). Please read more about what kind of pre-screening recording you are required to submit, as well as other performance area requirements, at Requirements Part 2: School of Music. For international applicants, we must additionally receive your official TOEFL score from ETS no later than the deadline. (ETS' institution code for UT Austin is 6882.)

Currently enrolled UT-Austin music students requesting admission to the graduate performance areas for Flute, Piano, Voice/Opera, or the DMA MHL Piano Pedagogy Specialization program are not required to submit a pre-screening recording but must request a live audition online for one of the departmental audition dates.

IMPORTANT FOR APPLICANTS TO THE COLLABORATIVE PIANO PROGRAMS (MM & DMA):

If you are applying for either the MM or DMA in Collaborative Piano, please contact Prof. Anne Epperson at pianneo@aol.com for details about the audition requirements. Prof. Epperson will be holding live auditions for Collaborative Piano on the UT campus on Feb. 9, 2008. (The revised degree program for the MM in Collaborative Piano, as well as the new degree program for the DMA in Collaborative Piano, will be posted soon.)

    STRING APPLICANTS:

With the exceptions of Alaska and Hawaii, if you are living in the continental United States (citizens, permanent residents and international students alike), you are REQUIRED to audition in person. Recorded auditions are not accepted. ONLY if you are residing outside of the United States is a VIDEO recording accepted. The video may be a DVD or VHS tape. Please see the Video/Audio Media Specifications on this page: Requirements Part 2: School of Music.

    Voice/Opera Only: Accompanists

The School of Music will provide an accompanist free of charge for vocal auditions ONLY if we RECEIVE your piano sheet music at least three weeks prior to your audition date. If necessary, have your music express-mailed. Faxed music is NOT allowed. You may also bring your own accompanist.

APPLICANTS IN ALL OTHER PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • If you are unable to attend any of the above dates but would still like to have a live audition, it may be possible for you to audition privately on a different day. Please contact the appropriate faculty member or division head by calling the School of Music switchboard (512) 471-7764. We suggest that you audition as early as possible. You may also submit an audio or video recording made within the past twelve months as a substitute for a live audition. If it is a video, it must adhere to the formats mentioned above.
