Procedures For Applying
To The University of Texas at Austin
Butler School of Music
Freshman Admission
To apply for admission to UT Austin as a first-time freshman, follow these steps:
- I. Take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT I) or the American College
Test (ACT) and designate the University of Texas at Austin as a score
recipient. It is recommended that you take the test as early as spring
of your junior year in high school. Scores must be sent electronically to the
University directly from the testing service. Xeroxed copies of test scores will
not be accepted. (Please note that is often takes 4-6 weeks for these
scores to reach UT admissions. Plan to take the test early enough that the scores
will be reported to the UT admissions office before the Feb. 1 deadline.)
- II. Apply to the UT Office of Admissions:
http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/
Make sure all the items required to make your application complete arrive in the
Office of Admissions by the deadlines. For information on required materials, please
see:

- III. Fill out the online Butler School of Music application form
and request an audition date (or submit an audition CD or cassette tape *) *Voice

February 1 (Please note that the deadline
for requesting the January 26 audition is January 12)
**Note: All Butler School of Music applications must be received
by the audition deadlines listed on the Butler School of Music application to guarantee
your audition date. No applications, requests for auditions or audition tapes/CDs
will be accepted after Feb. 1.
**For composition majors: In addition to the UT application, Butler
School of Music application and audition, you are required to submit a portfolio
of your compositions. Deadline to submit your composition portfolio is December
15. Applicants should submit a portfolio of three to five original compositions,
preferably for different combinations of instruments and /or voices. Scores may
be handwritten or prepared with music notation software. The scores should be accompanied
by recorded performances. If live performances are unavailable, synthesized performances
are acceptable.
Freshman and Transfers:
October 1 is the deadline for all students applying for Spring admission
Because we have no formally scheduled auditions for the Spring semester, you must
contact the appropriate faculty to schedule a private audition. Please go to the
following link to see our areas of study. Simply click on your area of interest
and it will lead you to the faculty listings:
http://www.music.utexas.edu/department/Default.aspx
Transfer Admission
*Important note for transfer students: Although the Fall deadline
for UT admissions is March 1 for transfers, you must complete your Butler School
of Music application (which includes the request for audition) by the deadlines
listed on the Butler School of Music application in order to be scheduled for an
audition. All audition tapes must also be received by Feb. 1. (or October 1 for
Spring). Application deadline for all International applicants is February 1 for
Fall and October 1 for Spring.
Only students who have 30 or more transferable hours are eligible for transfer admission.
Students may apply for admission before completing 30 transferable hours of credit
if completion of your work in progress will enable you to meet the 30 hour requirement
prior to enrollment at the University. However, the final admission decision will
not be completed until after U.T. Admissions receives your final transcript and
can verify that you have 30 hrs.
Admitted students must complete at least 60 semester hours of required coursework
for their undergraduate degree in residence at the University of Texas at Austin.
As a result, students transferring with more than 60 hours of transferable coursework
should carefully consider how transferring might impact the amount of coursework
required to earn a degree. Some students who began their studies at a Texas junior
or community college may be exempt from this rule. Contact the Office of Admissions
at 512-475-7387 for questions about coursework in residence.

Online Application Form
- II Prepare and take your music audition. In order
to be designated as a music major and register for music major courses, you must

If you do not pass your music audition but your academics qualify you for UT admission,
