Auditions
All prospective Butler School of Music students, regardless of their choice of degree
plan (and including those wishing to apply as a Music Composition or Music Business
or Recording Technology), must audition either in person or by tape or CD by the
deadlines set by the Butler School of Music. (Please note: Voice, flute, and string
students must perform a live audition unless they are living outside the continental
U.S.) All auditions are coordinated by the Butler School of Music Admissions office.

In order to sign up for an entrance/scholarship audition, submit a completed Butler
School of Music application form

You will receive confirmation of your audition date by e-mail after we receive your
Butler School of Music application. We do our best to place you on your requested
audition date. However we do not guarantee you a place on the last audition date
if you wait until the last minute to submit your application and audition request.
Plan to audition early, as space is limited for the later audition dates.
Music Composition applicants: Deadline to submit your composition portfolio
is December 15.
In addition to the UT application, Butler School of Music application and audition,
you are required to submit a portfolio of your compositions. Applicants should submit
a portfolio of three to five original compositions, preferably for different combinations
of instruments and /or voices. Scores may be handwritten or prepared with music
notation software. The scores should be accompanied by recorded performances. If
live performances are unavailable, synthesized performances are acceptable.
Live Auditions
- You must submit a completed
Butler School of Music Application Form , which includes a request for audition
date, by January 3 to guarantee your preferred audition date.
- Accompaniment for instrumental auditions is optional; accompaniment is not provided
for instrumental auditions. for vocalists, accompaniment will be provided upon request.
Taped Auditions:
- The recording must be on a high-quality audio cassette or CD, recorded in one direction
only with the tape cued to the beginning of the first selection.
- Make sure nothing is recorded on the tape other than the audition material.
- Repertoire is the same as for live auditions. (Please see link above)
- Make certain your name and address appear on both the cassette or CD and on the
tape or CD cover.
- Important note about taped auditions for vocalists and string players:
If you are living in the United States (citizens, permanent residents and international
students alike), you are REQUIRED to audition in person. We do not accept taped
auditions for voice or string applicants unless they are from outside the continental
U.S. ONLY if you are residing outside of the United States + Alaska and Hawaii, is
a VIDEO recording accepted. The video may be a DVD or VHS tape (NTSC color format
only and in stereo; PAL format is not accepted.) Mini-DV tapes and VCDs (video CDs)
are not accepted.
- Important note about taped auditions for flute players:
If you are living in the United States (citizens, permanent residents and international
students alike), you are REQUIRED to audition in person. We do not accept taped
auditions for undergraduate flute applicants unless they are from outside the continental
U.S. If you are residing outside of the United States + Alaska and Hawaii,
