Assistantships

Categories

Teaching Assistantships (open only to graduate students) are available in piano, voice, strings, winds, instrumental and vocal ensembles, music education, music theory, and musicology.

Stipends

For a Teaching Assistant (TA) or an Assistant Instructor (AI), salaries range from $2,276 to $9,878 for the entire nine-month (September-May) term, depending on previous training, experience, and other factors. Non-resident students who hold a full-time assistantship--20 hours per week--are eligible to pay the same tuition as Texas residents (in-state tuition).

Tuition Assistance Benefits

Teaching Assistants (TA) and Assistant Instructors (AI) who are appointed 10 hours (25% time) or more per week during the 2006-07 academic year will receive tuition assistance benefits, to be paid each semester as follows:

Each Long Session (Fall and Spring) Appointed 20 hours or more: $2,975
Appointed 10-19 hours: $1,487
Appointed less than 10 hours:$ 0

Summer Session (maximum of $1,108 paid per individual per summer - regardless of the length of the session or the number of sessions) Appointed 20 hours or more: $1,108
Appointed less than 20 hours:$ 0

Duties

TAs and AIs are assigned to individual, class, or laboratory instruction under the supervision of a faculty member, and are expected to teach from six to twelve hours per week, depending on the type of instruction, and to keep regular office hours. TAs and AIs are expected to carry a minimum course load of nine semester hours in addition to their teaching duties and maintain a grade point average of 3.00 with no incompletes.

Assistantship Applications

To apply, you should fill out the Assistantship Application . For applicants applying to graduate study it is recommended that the teaching assistantship application be submitted by February 1; however, teaching assistantship applications submitted after this date will still be accepted. Applications should be mailed to:

The University of Texas at Austin
Graduate Office, MRH 3.706
Butler School of Music
1 University Station, E3100
Austin, TX 78712-0435

The credentials used for assistantship applications are those used for consideration for admission (see Admission Requirements Part II). A live audition is strongly recommended, when possible, for performance applicants who want to be considered for assistantships. An interview with an appropriate faculty member is recommended for applicants in non-performance areas, although it is not required. Since each faculty division has separate criteria for awarding assistantships, applicants interested in an assistantship should contact the appropriate division head if they are unable to come to the University for a live audition or interview.

General Considerations

Because an assistantship can only be awarded to someone who has officially been admitted without conditions to The University of Texas at Austin, priority consideration will be given to those whose applications to the Graduate School are complete. In order to be admitted without conditions, your file must include the following:

  1. A minimum GPA of 3.0
  2. Official GRE/TOEFL scores (GRE not required for performance or composition applicants)
  3. Official transcripts of all completed college work
  4. Paid University Application fee.

See the Checklist for Assistants for graduate school qualifications.
