Dear Prospective Student:

We are pleased to learn of your interest in our graduate programs of study in music. The School of Music offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy. The Master of Music program provides for majors in Performance (including Opera, Conducting, and Jazz Emphasis), Music Composition (including Jazz Emphasis), Music Theory, Music and Human Learning, Musicology (including Ethnomusicology), and Literature/Pedagogy. The Doctor of Musical Arts provides for majors in Performance (including Opera, Conducting, and Jazz Emphasis), Music Composition (including Jazz Emphasis), and Music and Human Learning (including Jazz Emphasis). The Doctor of Philosophy is offered in Musicology (including Ethnomusicology), Music and Human Learning, and Music Theory.

Additional information:

  • INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS:
    If you an international student who has been accepted and has visa or immigration questions, you will need to email a Student Immigration Advisor at the International Office. If you decide to attend, you will be required to submit the Certification of Financial Responsibility form which can be found here.
  • DOCTORAL APPLICANTS:
    The UT School of Music does not offer direct admission to DMA or PhD programs from the bachelor's degree. If you wish to apply to the DMA programs in performance or composition, or PhD programs in Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Theory, or Music & Human Learning, you must first have earned or be completing your MM degree. If you only have a bachelor's degree, then you may only apply to a master's degree program. The only exception to this is for applicants to the PhD program in Music and Human Learning. A master's is still required for the DMA programs in Music and Human Learning.
  • University policy stipulates that notification concerning your admissions decision (accepted or denied) can only be communicated by mail and not by e-mail or phone. Decisions begin to be made in early March and generally end by mid-May.
