Admission Requirements Part I:
Graduate School

***This page may be updated until August 15, 2008.***

A. University Application for Admission to Graduate Study

  • U.S. citizens, permanent resident immigrants and international students must complete the appropriate graduate application for admission to the University of Texas. Accompanying the application is information about graduate study at UT as well as the deadline for the application and all supporting materials, which is DECEMBER 1, 2008.
  • Applicants applying for performance degrees MUST NOT choose "Literature/Pedagogy" on the online application form. For instance, if you would like to apply for Cello Performance, then you would choose the "Cello Performance" option rather than the "Cello Literature/Pedagogy" option on the online application. Only those students wishing to apply for the literature/pedagogy degree should choose this option. This detail is minor but very important, and it applies to all performance areas.
  • If you have any questions about which application to submit, please contact the UT Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC); their general line is (512) 475-7391. You may also inquire about the status of your application, transcripts and test scores, which are required by the University of Texas at Austin. Once the online application is submitted and paid for, it is possible to check the status of other application materials (such as arrival of transcripts, TOEFL and GRE scores) on the Status Check page.

B. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

  • One (1) official transcript from each college or university attended must be RECEIVED by the Graduate and International Admissions Center by the application deadline date, DECEMBER 1, 2008. This includes transcripts from any institution where you did or did not receive a degree.
  • Photocopies of transcripts mailed by the applicant are not considered official transcripts.
  • Owing to the variety of size and efficiency of various colleges and universities around the world, it is not uncommon for transcripts to take 1-2 months to arrive at UT after you order them. It may be possible to have your transcripts sent electronically. If the institutions you attended have this capability, it would hasten the process of completing your application.
  • The minimum grade-point average (GPA) required for UT admission is 3.0. This GPA is computed from upper-division course work (junior and senior courses taken at the bachelor level) and any graduate course work completed.

TEST SCORES: TOEFL & GRE

The ETS university code for UT is 6882. There is no department code for the UT School of Music. All applicants must request that ETS report official scores directly to the University of Texas. SCORE SHEETS SUBMITTED BY THE STUDENT ARE INVALID AND ARE NOT ACCEPTED BY THE UNIVERSITY. Since scores typically take 3-4 weeks to arrive and be processed, applicants should request their score no later than NOVEMBER 1 in order to meet the DECEMBER 1 deadline. Scores that arrive after the deadline will indicate an incomplete application that in turn cannot be considered appropriately.

C. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and the IELTS (International English Language Testing System

  • The TOEFL or IELTS exam is REQUIRED for all international students from countries where English is not the native language. A list of countries that are exempt from this requirement can be seen in the middle of this page. International applicants who have earned a 4-year bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution are also exempted from the TOEFL or IELTS requirement. **NOTE: This exemption does NOT apply to those who have earned their MASTERS from a U.S. institution. For example, if you are a DMA/PhD international applicant from the Republic of Korea and have a Korean bachelor's and American master's, then you still must submit a valid TOEFL or IELTS score that is less than two years old.
  • TOEFL scores should be RECEIVED by GIAC well in advance of the deadline and absolutely no later than the admission deadline, DECEMBER 1, 2008. TOEFL scores are valid for TWO years from the date the test was taken. Please consult the TOEFL website for more information at: http://www.toefl.org.
  • The TOEFL or IELTS exam score must be sent directly from ETS to GIAC in order to be considered official. If your TOEFL score is below the minimum requirement, your application cannot be taken as seriously as those whose scores meet the minimum requirement. UT requires the following minimum scores in order to be considered for admission.

    Internet-based (IBT): 79
    Computer-based: 213
    Paper-based: 550

  • IELTS: UT also now accepts the IELTS exam in place of the TOEFL, a test of English proficiency exam that is administered in over 120 countries. The minimum required score is 6.5. Please visit www.ielts.org for more information about scheduling and locations.

D. GRE (Graduate Record Examination General Test)

  • GRE: All academic applicants (Theory, Musicology, Ethnomusicology, and Music &; Human Learning (Music Education)) must request their official GRE score from ETS. The GRE is not required for performance or composition applicants. ETS will not report the score if it is more than FIVE years old at the time of the request.
  • For all academic applicants, there is no minimum required combined score but it is recommended that the score be above 1000. **NOTE: for international applicants, the one requirement is that you score higher than 400 on the verbal portion of the exam.
  • Applicants seeking admission to performance (including literature/pedagogy) or composition degree programs are not required to submit GRE scores. The GRE Music Subject Test is similarly not required.
  • Copies of your GRE scores must be official copies sent directly to GIAC from ETS or the testing center. Xeroxed copies of test scores are not accepted.
  • Scores should arrive at the Graduate and International Admissions Center well in advance of the admission deadlines. Please allow a minimum of six weeks for test scores of the paper and pencil administration of the GRE to arrive.
  • Only prospective international students who reside in countries where GRE testing is NOT available may be admitted conditionally to an academic degree program ONLY if after being admitted they agree to enroll in the full-time English as a Second Language (ESL) Program before beginning graduate course work. International students admitted in this manner must then take the GRE during their first semester at the University and successfully complete all recommended ESL courses before continuing in a graduate program in music.
