The University of Texas College of Fine Arts

Requirements Part 2: Butler School of Music

The following items should be sent directly to the School of Music. It is in your best interest to submit all items well in advance of the deadline. International applicants must take into account the extended mailing time when sending materials to the United States. Please read the following information carefully. Priority will be given to applications that are complete by or before December 1, 2008.

Applicants in Flute, Piano, Percussion, and Voice/Opera need only submit by Dec. 1 the online application, the application fee ($50 or $75), the pre-screening recording (see Letter C below for details), and the Audition Form indicating preferred dates. Additionally, international applicants must have their official TOEFL score submitted to UT Austin by ETS by Dec. 1. If you're invited to a live audition, then we can wait for the remaining materials to be received by your audition date. Exception: Flute, Piano, and Voice/Opera applicants who are able to make one of our Off-Site Auditions WILL NOT need to submit a pre-screening recording. Off-site auditions are not available for Percussion applicants.

ALL MATERIALS SUBMITTED WITHOUT YOUR FULL NAME WILL BE DISCARDED.

A. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

A written statement that should include objectives for graduate study, career plans, and the reasons for applying to our program. This should be 1-3 pages in length. You may use either the School of Music form from the Forms page or the one provided in the online application. Either is fine. It is also customary to send a resume or CV.

B. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

Three recommendation letters, written in the last 12 months, pertaining to the applicant’s potential for graduate study in music are required. When you apply online, you may submit the names and email addresses of your references. The university will then send a link to these references that will allow them to submit a recommendation form and letter electronically.

In lieu of the electronic form, your recommenders may mail a paper form with a typed letter attached. It is preferred that you use the Recommendation Letter form from our Forms page because it is more music-specific than the general form provided by the University.

If you are applying to two different degree programs, then six letters are required (as well as two Statements of Purpose) and you must furthermore meet the application requirements of each program.

C. AUDITION and/or SAMPLE WORK

  • Applications for graduate study cannot be evaluated without evidence of the applicant's performance ability and writing ability. The non-performance academic programs (Composition, Music Theory, Music and Human Learning, and Musicology/Ethnomusicology) do not require that the student have an audition. Exception: applicants who pass the pre-screening stage in the DMA program in Music and Human Learning with Specialization in Piano Pedagogy. In our academic areas, informal meetings can oftentimes be arranged, however, these must be handled directly with the relevant faculty.

Detailed audition repertoire requirements for nearly all areas, including requirements for pre-screening recordings, can be found in the pdf Graduate Audition Repertoire Requirements.

  • NOTE: If you send your recording to an individual performance professor, it can cause a lengthy delay in the review of your application. Please do so only at that professor's express consent.

  • PRE-SCREENING PROCESS: Applicants in Conducting (band, choral, opera, or orchestral), Flute, Piano, Percussion, and Voice/Opera, must submit a pre-screening recording in order to be invited to a live on-campus audition. This also applies to those applicants who wish to enter the Literature/Pedagogy degree options. Applicants in the following areas must send the appropriate recording - that adheres to the video or audio requirements below - in order to receive the invitation. Exception: Flute, Piano, and Voice/Opera applicants who are able to make one of our Off-Site Auditions WILL NOT need to submit a pre-screening recording. Off-site auditions are not available for Percussion and Conducting applicants. Please also see the video/audio media specifications listed below to ensure that your recording is formatted correctly:

Conducting: Both DVD and audio CD required.

Flute: US citizens must send an audio CD only. International flute applicants must send a DVD only.

    Piano: DVD only.

    Percussion: DVD only.

    Voice/Opera: DVD only.

In mid-December, successful applicants (with the exception of Conducting applicants) will begin to receive their invitations to the live audition date they indicated on the online Graduate Audition Form Graduate Audition Form (UT EID and password required). If more than one date is possible for you, please prioritize them. This process will be complete by the second week of January, so it may be possible that your audition is scheduled just after the New Year.

    Video/Audio Media Specifications

DVD: NTSC format (not PAL). Region format must be Region 1 (for North America) or Region 0 (region-free).

VHS videocassette: NTSC format (not PAL). Recorded in SP mode (not LP or EP).

CD: CD-Audio (Red Book standard) only, playable on a conventional CD player.

Mini-DV tapes, VCDs (video CDs), and other formats are not accepted.

  • STRING applicants (cello, double bass, guitar, viola and violin) who live in the continental United States (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) are REQUIRED to schedule a live audition on one of the general audition dates. If you live outside of the United States, then you may submit a DVD to satisfy the audition requirement. CDs are not accepted.

  • PIANO applicants are REQUIRED to schedule a live audition on one of the general audition dates. Audition recordings are no longer acceptable whether you live in the United States or not.

  • Other Applicants: For applicants other than Flute, Piano, Percussion and Voice/Opera, on-site live auditions are scheduled after submitting ALL required application materials – including the Online Audition Form – and indicating the desired audition date on that form. (Conducting auditions do not fall on the published dates and are scheduled privately with the Conducting faculty.) Live auditions are held exclusively for applicants seeking a performance degree and the DMA in Music & Human Learning (Piano Pedagogy).

  • If the aforementioned information doesn't apply to your area, and if you cannot attend a live on-site or off-site audition, then you may send a recording to satisfy the audition requirement. This may be a CD, DVD, or VHS tape. All media and/or written work submitted must be clearly marked with the applicant's name and should be sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Coordinator in the Graduate Office of the School of Music.

  • Upon completion of the application, applicants in DMA Opera Directing or Opera Coaching must arrange an audition and interview directly with Professor Robert DeSimone (rdesimone@mail.utexas.edu).

  • Audition recordings MUST have been made less than 12 months prior to the admission deadline of Dec. 1.

  • All application materials sent to UT and the School of Music cannot be returned.

    About the Formal Review

Qualified doctoral applicants, whose written materials, videos and test scores pass the initial faculty evaluation, are invited to participate in an on-campus Admission Review, which is typically scheduled on two of the Fridays before our three audition dates (dates yet to be determined). On the day of the Review, applicants write extemporaneously for approximately two hours in response to questions about music teaching and learning and participate in an interview with the Music & Human Learning faculty, during which applicants discuss their past experiences and career aspirations, and demonstrate their knowledge of music and teaching.

Official admission to doctoral programs in Music and Human Learning is granted at the conclusion of the second semester in residence, following a formal faculty review of students’ performance in first year of coursework.
