Scholarship Guidelines
 
I. General Requirements

Scholarships are awarded by the Student Awards Committee, based on students' credentials and on the recommendation of each faculty division. Applicants will be considered only when the following information is on file:

  1. Complete admission application
  2. Three letters of recommendation
  3. Audition results (performance applicants) or evaluation of
    application file (non-performance applicants)

Applicants may also submit a letter of financial need to the music school for further scholarship consideration.

II. Minimum Scholastic Requirements

A. Graduate students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 (GPA of 3.25 for undergraduates) while under scholarship assistance and to be considered for continued scholarship assistance.

B. Grade criteria for students who are currently on scholarship will be reviewed at the end of each semester.

C. Graduate students must enroll in a minimum of 9 hours (12 hours for undergraduates) of course work each semester while under scholarship assistance.

D. Graduate scholarship award recipients in a performance area must register and participate in designated ensembles or participate in accompanying.

III. Scholarship Renewals

A. Scholarship renewals will be reviewed by each student's division faculty and by the Butler School of Music Student Awards Committee.

B. Students will be considered for scholarship renewal only if timely progress is being made toward completion of the designated degree. The following time limits are established for degree completion. Students are eligible for scholarship assistance only within the number of years of study listed below:

  1. Bachelor's Degree - Five Years* (Exception: Piano - Four Years)"
  2. Master's Degree - Two Years*
  3. Doctoral Degree - Three Years*

*Graduate Keyboard students who pursue both their Masters and Doctoral Degrees at UT will be eligible for financial assistance from the School of Music for a maximum of four years of graduate study.

IV. Other Information

In light of recent changes in Federal Tax Laws, students should consult a reliable source concerning tax liability related to scholarships and other stipends.
