The College of Fine Arts, to which the Butler School of Music belongs, has required
academic advising before registration for all undergraduates. Advising periods immediately
precede pre-registration periods during the two long semesters. Advising during
the fall semester (for spring semester classes) usually takes place near the end
of October; advising during the spring semester (for summer and fall classes) usually
takes place near the middle of April.
During required advising, Butler School of Music students meet with their assigned
faculty advisors/mentors to discuss their progress and their plans for the coming
semester(s); some students are also required to meet with me, Susan Jackson, the
academic advisor, each semester. ( All students need to see me at least once a year;
in reality, most students see me far more frequently.) After consultation with their
faculty advisor—and with me, if required—students may register for the coming semester(s).
